The past few weeks we have learned about two very important families in the bible. Two weeks ago we learned about Abraham and Sarah. We saw where God asked Abraham to pack all of his belongings and go to a new land that He wanted to give him. Abraham did as God asked him and went to the land of Canaan. God blessed Abraham and his family with so many animals that they couldn’t count them all. God also told Abraham that because he had obeyed his family would grow and grow and grow. He wouldn’t be able to count all the people in his family – there would be more than the stars in the sky. One day 3 messengers from God came to visit and told Abraham and Sarah they would have a baby. God did just that – Sarah had a baby boy named Isaac, whose name meant “laughter”. The name they gave him showed how thankful and happy they were that God kept his promise. We continued to talk about what it means to obey and how important that is to God, our parents, and our teachers. This past week we learned about Joseph, who had 11 brothers who did not like him very much. Joseph was gifted and could interpret his dreams and those of other people. One day he bragged to his brothers that he had a dream that in the future he would be the greatest and they would bow down to him. His brothers already did not like him because he was the favorite son in his father’s eyes. His father had given him a special coat and all the brothers were jealous. After hearing him brag that he was going to be the greatest, they decided to throw him in a pit and then sell him to someone as a slave. Then poor Joseph was put in jail for something he didn’t even do. This week we will finish up this story and see how God worked everything that happened to Joseph for good in Joseph’s life and the life of his father and brothers. Our bible verse for this month is “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. Hebrews 13:6. Ask your child to say it for you – you might be surprised at how much they’ve learned.
